Retinaldehyde (Retinal)

Retinal is Medik8’s revolutionary form of vitamin A, found in our cult-favourite Crystal Retinal serum. It is one conversion step closer than retinol to the active form of vitamin A (retinoic acid), that all forms of vitamin A must convert to before becoming effective on the skin. As a result, retinal is 11x faster acting on the skin than retinol[1], without any added irritation potential.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is retinaldehyde?

Retinaldehyde (or retinal) is a vitamin A derivative that's gentler yet highly effective for anti-aging and acne-prone skin.

What are the benefits of retinaldehyde?

Retinaldehyde helps reduce wrinkles, fade hyperpigmentation, improve skin texture, and treat acne. It boosts collagen production and promotes cell turnover for a smoother, more youthful complexion.

Is retinaldehyde better than retinol?

Retinaldehyde is often considered more potent than retinol because it converts more quickly to retinoic acid in the skin. It can deliver similar results with less irritation.

What percentage of retinaldehyde is best?

Start with a lower concentration (0.01% - 0.05%) and gradually increase as tolerated. Higher percentages (0.1% - 0.3%) are more potent but may cause more irritation.

Is retinaldehyde over the counter?

Yes, retinaldehyde products are available over the counter in various strengths and formulations.

What are the side effects of retinaldehyde?

Some may experience mild redness, dryness, or peeling initially. Using it gradually and moisturizing well can help minimize these effects.

Does retinaldehyde remove dark spots?

Yes, retinaldehyde can help fade hyperpigmentation and dark spots by promoting cell turnover and inhibiting melanin production.

What age should you start using retinaldehyde?

You can start using retinaldehyde in your 20s to prevent early signs of aging or later to address existing concerns like wrinkles and dark spots. It's never too late to benefit from retinaldehyde!

How should I incorporate retinaldehyde into my skincare routine?

Apply a pea-sized amount of retinaldehyde product to clean, dry skin at night. Start with 2-3 times per week and gradually increase frequency as tolerated. Always follow with sunscreen during the day.
